In this article, I will be using myself as an example of how can it influence someone’s life. I started learning Taekwondo in December of 2016. On my first day, I was calm and not nervous, but at the end of class, Master Kevin told me to come to the front of the class. Then he called my Aunt and asked if I had any bad habits. She said no. Then he told me to break the board. I broke the board, but then he screamed at me, “Kiai?” Then I realized that I didn’t Kiai. I was so thrilled and enthusiastic, that I forgot to scream Kiai. I just broke the board. >3

From that day on, I’ve looked forward to all of my Taekwondo classes because they increased my stamina. I also learned how to be patient, by working on complex skills. Taekwondo has influenced my life by teaching me what perseverance is. I remember when I was a white belt, I needed to learn the Korean numbers. Even when I was working on homework for other subjects, I was trying to learn the Korean numbers in my head. With my determination, I learned them in less than a week. Even after I learned them, I kept bugging my mom to quiz me.

This helped me understand Taekwondo more. Another way in which Taekwondo has influenced my life by teaching me how to challenge myself. During sparring matches, I do try new kicks, but round kicks are still my favorite. This has taught me that it is important to challenge myself even outside of Taekwondo. In our Bodan class, we are learning the form Koryo. I challenge myself by practicing the form faster and stronger, not just walking through the form.

Also, Taekwondo helped me de-stress. I think to remove any stress, having some time away from school benefits your overall health. It helps me concentrate on my lessons. All stress fades away as I walk into the Taekwondo class. Taekwondo has influenced my life in numerous positive ways. It has shown me that it is healthy to de-stress from time to time. It has taught me patience and leadership. These qualities are important to me because it has shown me that Taekwondo can really change my life by keeping me safe and helping me make tough decisions even outside Taekwondo, such as how to take initiative.
